Ms. Sonal Shah

Sonal Shah is Principal Associate – Urban Development and Accessibility and anchors the (Public) Streets and Public Spaces Work Area at EMBARQ India. She coordinates projects, research and publications on station area plans, street design guidelines, neighbourhood / business district improvement plans, public space design and gender and access; and brings expertise on how these can be incorporated in planning acts, guidelines, master plans and development regulations. Her work both past and present is characterized by a consistent theme – using grounded research to influence planning policy and practice.

She has worn multiple hats in her engagement with government agencies, academic institutions, non-profit organizations and the private sector in USA and in India - as an advocate of sustainable transport, as visiting faculty, research and dissertation guide, as a knowledge facilitator, as a resident council member on the Board of Trustees at International House, New York and student’s council at Columbia University.

Passionate about knowledge exchange, she has initiated the brown bag series in EMBARQ India - a weekly informal exchange amongst staff - and facilitated discussions around sustainable transport at research labs like Studio X. She has presented in numerous conferences including Walk 21 (Munich), Eco-mobility Conference (Seoul) and Connect Karo (Mumbai).

Sonal is an architect-urban planner. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in architecture from Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies, Mumbai and a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from Columbia University, New York.
